UMF VS MGO: Manuka Honey Grading System
When it comes to buying genuine manuka honey, many shoppers are left confused by UMF and MGO honey rating labels on manuka jars. So what do UMF and MGO labels mean to you as a consumer, and what is the grading systems role in the Manuka Honey industry?
Manuka honey labeled 'UMF®' (Unique Manuka Factor) has been through a complete advanced testing procedure to confirm the presence of key signature markers including MGO, Leptosperin and NPA – found only in genuine, and pure quality Mānuka honey from New Zealand. Only Monofloral Manuka Honey that has been packed in New Zealand can be graded as UMF®
MGO labeled Manuka honey has been tested for the MGO (Methylglyoxal compound) concentration levels present naturally in Manuka Honey. As high levels of Methylglyoxal are not present in other honeys, it is also a marker of genuine manuka honey. MGO graded honey can be either Monofloral or Multifloral Manuka honey and could have been packed in NZ or in another country.
